New Farm Bill Commentary by John Frydenlund released today
Washington Times editorial quotes Tom Schatz here:
Thomas Schatz, president of the government-waste organization, “applaud[ed]” the FRESH Act because it “would replace Depression-era farm-subsidy programs with programs that would provide a real safety net for farmers when they need it instead of doling out excessive payments to the [...]

Hillary backed lab of donor
Lawmakers, including Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, have taken thousands in campaign cash from an embattled Nobel-prize winning scientist while earmarking federal money for his New York lab.
…Leslie K. Paige, spokeswoman for District-based Citizens Against Government Waste, said there”s nothing in the law that prevents beneficiaries of earmarks from donating campaign money [...]

Budget aims to bring farmers to market
Farmers could get training on their own through local colleges and existing programs, such as the agricultural extension service, said Leslie Paige, vice president of Citizens Against Government Waste, a Washington, D.C., nonprofit.

Yesterday’s Republican presidential debate in Florida was all about who is the “most conservative” candidate. From the transcript, there are two items worth noting. First, Rep. Tom Tancredo forgets who his friends are. Then John McCain comes up with the best line of the evening.
TANCREDO: And, yes, I do think that there are organizations that should be [...]

The left-of-center Brookings Institution posted some testimony on lobbying and ethics reforms today and, without having read all of their presecriptions for long-term reforms, they seem to accurately diagnose the main problem when it comes to earmarking, which is the near absence of real transparency. That, and the congenital inability of politicians to simply say “NO” when asked to fund some [...]

Talk about a self-serving pork-barrel project. House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) is forcing the City College of New York to name three projects after himself - the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service, the Rangel Conference Center, and The Charles Rangel Library. Later today, porkbusting Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) will try to [...]

The federal government, ok government at all levels, is obsessed with regulating industries. This report is just another example of the fed’s obsession.
I love my cell phone, I love my internet connection, and I love cable television. I suspect that once the government gets their grubby little hands on it we all will suffer.

Don’t mean to gang up on Hillary today but there seems to be a lot going on in her life right now. Had to link to this story in the Washington Post in which she rejects the notion that Social Security is in crisis! Also read nationally-syndicated columnist Star Parker’s take-down of Hillary…the putative Democratic nominee may not [...]

From USA Today, an article looking at earmarks for NY’s Clinton and Shumer, trying to connect the earmark-to-campaign-contribution dots. Gee, haven’t these folks learned to put a little daylight between the award of the wasteful earmark and the practically-next-day campaign contribution, for crying out loud? (Hello? Favor Factory 101). I guess not. Interesting factoids:
“The man behind [...]

and the finger-pointing commences. Though when it comes to pork, the Senate is by far the “porkier” of the two chambers. Historically more bad legislation gets passed in the Senate and it is where good laws go to die. And her preening over the “sweeping ethics reform” package is amusing. As we and others have amply illustrated, the so-called earmark reform Congress passed was weak [...]

This should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone, but just in case you need confirmation that Congress under the current leadership is even less appealing than it was under the Republican leadership, here it is.
If you want to know why, go here, and here, and here, and I am getting tired of typing already….
