Gainful Employment Vote
The Council for Citizens Against Government Waste applauds Chairman John Kline (R-MN) of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) of the Subcommittee on Higher Education, and Representatives Alcee Hastings (D-FL) and Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) for introducing an amendment that will defund the Department of Education’s proposed Gainful Employment rule.
We are pleased that the amendment has been offered and are urging it’s passage to combat the potential effect of the proposed Gainful Employment regulation. The rule aims to lower student loan default rates, but if implemented would decrease access to quality career college programs. By limiting career college students’ ability to receive Title IV financial aid, it would restrict students from access to the flexible programs that career colleges offer to prepare Americans for the workforce. The U.S. Chamber of Congress has warned that if Gainful Employment is implemented, it will result in 100,000 jobs lost and a $5.3 billion burden on taxpayers. As the Administration and Congress work to pull the United States out of this tough economic recession, we need to ensure that students are able to acquire the skills necessary to successfully contribute to the American workforce. CCAGW stands with Congress and fully supports this amendment to defund the unfair restrictions on career colleges proposed by the Department of Education.
